Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2010/

Serpentine Gallery is a very small gallery, located inside Kensington Gardens.
Every summer, there is an architectural exhibition at this gallery, taking advantage of the space - though the gallery itself has limited space inside the building, Kesington Gardens has lots of space!

This year's exhibition was this.. red.. roofed terrace café.. not sure this is the right description though.

The building was designed by Jean Nouvel.  In the video, the architect says that London is characteristically "red" (eg. double decker, telephone booths..), and he thought of this bright colour, standing in the middle of a green park.  The effect is clear - it really stands out, and is almost blinding.  Everything here is red- even the fridges in the café!

I like the openness and the airiness of the pavilion, and the way it invites people in.  There are hammocks and pin-pong table too..

There are small funny tricks here and there that you discover as you go inside and sit down.
I look forward to going back, next time maybe to sit on one of the cushions on the floor, and read my book, feeling the breeze..

Gooseberry tart/

I love gooseberries.  They are.. rather funny looking fruits I guess, but funny-cute.  They are so tart that you can't eat them on their own (or so I think) - but they are lovely in a fruit tart.

So, I baked this gooseberry tart.
When I took the tart from the oven, I had to remind myself that there are many things in this world that don't look as good as they taste - or taste better than they look.  Sea urchin.  Squid ink.  Hummus.  Peanut butter.  Oh well.  I consider cooked gooseberries to be one of them... sadly.   Don't let the looks affect your appetite!

This recipe comes from Delia Smith, and as she states, it is super easy.  It is almost annoying, because it is so easy, and yet it tastes so good.  The sharp tartness of the berries goes very well with the rich custard, and it is so pleasantly refreshing.  I think it is a perfect summer dessert.

I made a whole jar of gooseberry jam too- which goes beautifully well with scones, as it cuts the richness of clotted cream.
The only issue would be.. that you end up eating too many scones, and will have to carry on eating scones to consume this jam, as it is too tart to eat on its own with toast.
Maybe I need to have a tea party to consume the gooseberry jam..

Borough Market

We went to Borough Market this morning.
Our objective was coffee and cherries - we were after yellow cherries.  There must be some yellow ones that are produced in the UK, or at least somewhere in the EU?  We thought we would have a chance of finding them, if we went to Borough Market.  In Japan, we normally have yellow cherries, so I think there is a bit of a nostalgic element for me.

So, first to Monmouth Coffee.  Anyone who claims him/herself a coffee lover in London must know this shop.     Their main shop is in Covent Garden, but this branch has got a bigger seating area, and felt more airy and comfortable.

We had takeaway coffees, and enjoyed them with home-made madeleines..
The one with heart-shaped coffee art is cafe au lait, and the one that looks like a leaf is caffe latte.

We then walked around in the market, looking for the yellow cherries, ... but we didn't find any :(

So, in the end, we only fulfilled our coffee objective, however, it was still nice and pleasant to get up early on a Saturday morning, and walk around the food market.  It was a very pleasant day too, and we left the place before it got too crowded with tourists.

Well, seems we have to wait another year to have yellow cherries...

Madeleines/

I baked some madeleines today.  It was actually the first time I have baked them at home..

I always wanted to have a madeleine mould, but I have to be very careful with what I buy, as our kitchen has limited storage.  Finally I made a decision to buy one, and got it in Paris when I did the crazy one-day trip there.
I have been meaning to bake some.. and finally did.  I enjoyed baking them.. so fun and cute to watch them puff up!

I find it quite interesting that in Japan, they always present madeleines with their shell-side up.  However, I  was told that the "exploded side" is supposed to be facing up, by a French person.  I quite like the puffed up face, I think it's cute.

They often say that butter-based cakes are nicer after a few days, than straight after baking.  However, madeleines are an exception, you should eat them as soon as possible.
One of my baking books says "it's the chef's privilege to eat the straight-from-oven madeleines - it's crusty outside, and warm and moist inside, delicious!".

Of course I gave in to the temptation..  and I totally agree with her!

East meets West/

Someone I met in Japan during the event in May sent me a lovely gift the other day - a "starter kit" for making matcha (powdered green tea).
Normally, matcha is served at Japanese tea ceremonies.  And, in order to "perform" the ceremony, you will need to take lessons to understand all the rules.  I have always wanted to take tea ceremony lessons, but unfortunately I haven't managed it yet.
However, well - you can still make matcha green tea, without the ceremony...

So, this is my first ever matcha that I made myself.  It is correct that it is slightly foamy.  I love the colour - such lovely green!

She sent me not only the starter kit, but also a book about tea ceremony, some matcha tea, and Japanese sweets, monaka.  Monaka consists of two wafer-like crispy "shells" and red bean curd centre.  It goes very well with green tea.

In the letter she wrote that I should try the sweet with clotted cream, as it is a "tested and loved" recipe.  Of course, it is very unusual combination, but I trusted her, and tried it, as recommended.

.. and.. it was not bad at all!  Somehow, it had a nostalgic flavour, though it was the first time I ate monaka with clotted cream.  It went very well with my matcha tea.
I am very grateful for my new friend - and I hope I see her soon again, perhaps in London next time!

Tea-tox at Brown's Hotel/

Today I had a meeting at Brown's Hotel - over afternoon tea.  We were recommended to try their new afternoon tea, which is called Tea-tox.  According to the stylish card given at the table, it is "a healthy version of Brown's award-winning Traditional Afternoon Tea".

The head pastry chef at Brown's, Fabien, is a friend.  I know how good he is, and I always liked what he did for afternoon tea at Brown's. However, to be honest, I was not sure I was going to like his non-sugar added pastries...

The three tiers consisted of:
- Gluten free open-face sandwiches and savoury biscuits
- Crudités with hummus
- Sugar free pastries: apple and cucumber jelly, raspberry sorbet, chocolate cup with lemon cream and blueberries, orange almond cake with yoghurt topping, and carrot seed cake.

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised - that they were all very good!
I was sure that I would detect the artificial sweetness straight away, but it was not very easy.  My favourite was the orange cake, which was moist and rich, yet refreshing.

Since this Tea-tox just started from Sunday, we were among the first guests to try it.
If I were a tourist coming for afternoon tea at Brown's, perhaps I would have gone for the normal afternoon tea, in order to have the signature scones.  However, it was a good change, especially after the well-fed weekend in the South of France...

~  。~  。~  。~  。~  。

Weekend in South of France- Part 2/

Another bright and hot day...

After a lovely breakfast which consisted of croissants, yoghurt, fresh fruits and coffee, we went down to the local farmers' market.
Everything here comes from the area, so it is super fresh.  I took advantage of the opportunity to record some of the summery colours.  The fruits and vegetables looked just so... beautiful!

We picked up some tomatoes, salad leaves, a melon, a few round courgettes and a goats' cheese at the market, dropped by at the bakery, and headed back home for lunch.

After the lunch, we fought the temptation to take a nap, and went out to run another errand - we wanted to buy some good quality olive oil to bring back to London.  We went to a village called Callas, where there is an olive oil mill.  After some olive oil tasting, we picked the one which won the gold medal at a regional competition of 2010 .

Though it was not our original plan, we decided to go over to a château called Château d'Esclans.  The château itself is a lovely place, which almost makes you dream of owning your own vineyard.  Last year, we bought a lovely rosé here, so we basically returned for more..

... So our suitcase on the way back was quite packed.  However, we were not sorry to drag our significantly heavier suitcase, as it was packed with lots of goodies!!
