The Basque Tour: Sweet Temptation/

There was one thing I really wanted to try in Basque country (apart from pinxos) - Gateau Basque.

Gateau Basque is a tart (well, kind of), encasing either pastry cream or cherry jam, and then the top closed with another layer of pastry dough.  I had never had one - was saving it for the real thing :)

So, these were the two I bought in Bayonne.
I preferred the cherry one - though it was a small version (12cm?), it can be quite filling.  So the tang of cherry worked nicer than the sweetness of the cream.

In case you are wondering, this was our breakfast.  I didn't have the courage to demolish this between our extravagant pinxos meals.

This was my third time to visit Spain, and finally I managed to taste something I missed during my two previous visits: churros and chocolate!

My understanding was that this was a traditional breakfast.  So I was wondering if we were breaking the local rules to have them as an afternoon treat.
I guess we didn't, as most of the tables had the same thing.
We loved dipping the hot, freshly made churros into the thick hot chocolate.  Yummm...

Spaniards must like hot, sweet drinks.  We saw something called "cafe bonbon" in many cafes, and were wondering what it was.  We ordered it out of curiosity - and it turned out to be half espresso-half condensed milk.

It was good (who would dislike condensed milk with coffee??), but very sweet (and note that it was even served with a sachet of sugar).  I don't want to think how many calories or how much sugar was in this small cup.

We had this on the final night, and it was a good finale to strengthen our resolution to go on a diet as soon as we arrived London.

The Basque Tour: PINXOS /

San Sebastian is known as a "Gastronomic Capital", and there are many Michelin star restaurants in the city and around the area.

However, we were not after Michelin-starred restaurants on this trip, but PINXOS.

Pinxos are (kind of) open-faced sandwiches fixed with cocktail picks.  They tend to be simple but one bar can have 20 different types of pinxos, and they are all terribly yummy.

This is one of our favourites - blood sausage with a sunny-side up.
It is so cute and even arty- we saw many quail's eggs used for pinxos, and I think it is a great idea.

Sometimes you get ones without the bread underneath (but on the side).
A tortilla... no explanation required, I guess..
By the way, I didn't stab the fork.  It came like this.  Edgy.

I love sardines and anchovies.  I think whenever we found a new type of pinxos with anchovies, we couldn't resist it (and I lost count of them).

We hopped from one pinxos bar to another, hoping to find something new each time.
And, we came across this pinxos bar in Bilbao.

Almost all the pinxos they had were with cheese!!!  What a fabulous idea.
This one is with a huge chunk of parmesan cheese, a drizzle of acacia honey and pepper.
Divine.

I wish I could show all the photos, but that will just make you hungry, envious, and then finally want to kill me for having been there while you were not.
So, I'll stop here...

=<=<=<=<

The Basque Tour: The Cities/

There was a wedding in New York, and there was another wedding in London:
Wills and Kate.
Since we were not invited, we decided to take advantage of the four-days off and went to the Basque region.

Our first destination was San Sebastian, where we drove to from Bilbao.

Of course its gastronomic offering is the biggest attraction (at least for us), but even beside that I can see why this place could  be a charming destination for holiday makers.

On the 2nd day, we drove up to Bayonne.  Bayonne was another charming town.  People seemed relaxed and calm, and were more friendly than in big cities in France.  You know where I am talking about.

It was a quick day-trip, but I felt like I could spend more time there.

I especially liked the cloister at the Cathedral, and spent a long time taking the photos.

We also watched the Royal Wedding on TV here..

After visiting San Sebastian and Bayonne, we went back to Bilbao.  Apparently Bilbao was not really a Destination (with a capital D) until they built the Guggenheim.

The outside of the building is made of titanium plates.  Our first sight of the museum was in the glow of the setting sun, and it was an extraordinary view.  Unfortunately we were driving into the city, and there was no way that we could stop the car and take a photo.  Shame.
I confess that we only saw the museum from the outside, and not the exhibition inside - as we heard that the best "art" here was the building itself (and perhaps the giant flowery puppy).

So, these were the sights that we saw on the trip.
When I go through the photos I took, it is quite obvious that the trip was more an eating trip than a sight seeing trip.
I don't know why this is not a surprise to me- and perhaps is not to my family, or to my friends..

^=^=^=^=^=^

I know I have a tendency to look up while walking.  I think I did this even more while I was in New York.  There are so many Art Deco style buildings, and they are so interesting to see.

Not sure what this one is..

Fuller Building.

Empire State building (though not Art Deco).

..and, Chrysler Building.

Even when I was inside a building, I would still look up - especially in a place like Grand Central Station.  I thought the constellations on the ceiling quite wacky - in a good way.

Well, I know that I took a risk looking up all the time.  New Yorkers are always rushed and in a hurry, and can't stand those who don't move as quickly as they do.  They won't smile at you and think, "ah, tourist, ok".
I think I was shoved more than a couple of times.  Oh well.

>->->->->->

New York Part 1 - size matters/

We went to New York over the Easter weekend.  My husband's brother was getting married.
Since I stay away from showing any personal photos on this blog, I won't be writing much about the wedding here.  Instead, well, yes, I will write about food.

We arrived around 13:30 at our hotel in NY.  So, the first thing we had to do was - of course, go for lunch.  We found a bagel shop nearby, so popped in, and ordered the most simple, cream cheese bagel.  You can't go wrong with this kind of stuff, right?
It was good - but it was so huge that I could barely finish half of it.

I think it was nearly as big as my face.

On the third day of our stay, we stopped at Bouchon Bakery for a tea break.  I had a oatmeal & raisin cookie.  It was, again, gigantic.
You see that the cookie is bigger than the cup?

..And, you can't say you've had an American culinary experience without going to a diner.  So we did on the last day, and had some traditional breakfast - pancakes with bacon.

I was completely defeated - from a stack of three pancakes, I only managed to eat 1 and 1/8.

If so many Americans are having problem with obesity, ... I think I know why...

>->->->->
