The Basque Tour: The Cities/ バスク地方へ

There was a wedding in New York, and there was another wedding in London:
Wills and Kate.
Since we were not invited, we decided to take advantage of the four-days off and went to the Basque region.

Our first destination was San Sebastian, where we drove to from Bilbao.

Of course its gastronomic offering is the biggest attraction (at least for us), but even beside that I can see why this place could  be a charming destination for holiday makers.

On the 2nd day, we drove up to Bayonne.  Bayonne was another charming town.  People seemed relaxed and calm, and were more friendly than in big cities in France.  You know where I am talking about.

It was a quick day-trip, but I felt like I could spend more time there.  

I especially liked the cloister at the Cathedral, and spent a long time taking the photos.

After visiting San Sebastian and Bayonne, we went back to Bilbao.  Apparently Bilbao was not really a Destination (with a capital D) until they built the Guggenheim.

The outside of the building is made of titanium plates.  Our first sight of the museum was in the glow of the setting sun, and it was an extraordinary view.  Unfortunately we were driving into the city, and there was no way that we could stop the car and take a photo.  Shame.
I confess that we only saw the museum from the outside, and not the exhibition inside - as we heard that the best "art" here was the building itself (and perhaps the giant flowery puppy).

So, these were the sights that we saw on the trip.
When I go through the photos I took, it is quite obvious that the trip was more an eating trip than a sight seeing trip.
I don't know why this is not a surprise to me- and perhaps is not to my family, or to my friends..

さて、ニューヨークでの義弟の結婚式のほか、ロンドンでも結婚式がありました。
ロイヤル・ウェディングです。
私たちはこちらの式は招かれていませんでしたし（笑）、市内ではどんちゃん騒ぎになりそうだったので、逃亡計画を企てました。
格安航空券を物色した結果、バスク地方に行くことに。

まずはスペイン北東部にある街、ビルバオに飛び、そこからレンタカーで近郊のサン・セバスチャンへ向かいました。

サン・セバスチャンは食の都として名高いのですが、綺麗な浜辺もあり、なかなか雰囲気の良い街でした。
フランスからのバカンス客が多いのだとか。
ここでまず一泊しました。

翌日は車で、今度は国境を越えてフランスのバイヨンヌへ。
バイヨンヌは、なんだか落ち着いた感じのする街でした。人々がゆったりしているというか、時間がゆっくり流れているというか。

ここでは、大聖堂の廻廊でだいぶ時間を過ごしました。

廻廊大好き～。たくさん写真撮っちゃいました。

今回は日帰り小旅行だったけれど、またゆっくり行ってみたい街です。のんびり出来そう。

この日はバイヨンヌからビルバオに戻り、夜はビルバオ泊。
3日目はビルバオ観光です。
この街はこのグッゲンハイム美術館で有名ですが、この美術館が出来るまでは、観光で訪れる人は稀だったのだそうです。

この美術館の外壁はチタンのプレートで覆われており、時間によって（太陽の位置や光によって）色が変わって見える、というもの。
前日、ビルバオ市内に入ってきたのがちょうど夕暮れ時でした。夕焼けの光の中でみた美術館はとてもきれいでした。


グッゲンハイムの最高のアートはこの建築だ、っていうので．．

．．．中は見ませんでした．．．。

建物外観と周辺のオブジェと、正面の花のワンちゃん（↓）見たからいいや、と。

以上が、今回訪れた3つの街の様子です。
写真を見返すと、我ながら呆れるほど食べ物の写真ばっかり。
はっきりと自分の興味が現れますね．．．
