The Basque Tour: Sweet Temptation/

There was one thing I really wanted to try in Basque country (apart from pinxos) - Gateau Basque.

Gateau Basque is a tart (well, kind of), encasing either pastry cream or cherry jam, and then the top closed with another layer of pastry dough.  I had never had one - was saving it for the real thing :)

So, these were the two I bought in Bayonne.
I preferred the cherry one - though it was a small version (12cm?), it can be quite filling.  So the tang of cherry worked nicer than the sweetness of the cream.

In case you are wondering, this was our breakfast.  I didn't have the courage to demolish this between our extravagant pinxos meals.

This was my third time to visit Spain, and finally I managed to taste something I missed during my two previous visits: churros and chocolate!

My understanding was that this was a traditional breakfast.  So I was wondering if we were breaking the local rules to have them as an afternoon treat.
I guess we didn't, as most of the tables had the same thing.
We loved dipping the hot, freshly made churros into the thick hot chocolate.  Yummm...

Spaniards must like hot, sweet drinks.  We saw something called "cafe bonbon" in many cafes, and were wondering what it was.  We ordered it out of curiosity - and it turned out to be half espresso-half condensed milk.

It was good (who would dislike condensed milk with coffee??), but very sweet (and note that it was even served with a sachet of sugar).  I don't want to think how many calories or how much sugar was in this small cup.

We had this on the final night, and it was a good finale to strengthen our resolution to go on a diet as soon as we arrived London.
