Madly in love with rhubarb/

Since I started writing this blog, I realised that I have more "obsessions" than I thought...
And rhubarb is definitely one of them.

This is forced rhubarb from Yorkshire, which is grown in the dark- and harvested by candle light.

I used to think that rhubarb was a summer thing (vegetable, strictly speaking).  Then after a while, I realised that there was something called "forced rhubarb" that starts appearing from early spring.  They are pink- not like the summer ones that are slightly red towards the root, and mainly green.

And, there is also ruby-red rhubarb.  Just like asparagus, apparently rhubarb gets green when the stems are exposed to sunlight.  One day, someone found out that rhubarb that grew under the chimney pot left up-side-down was very red, tender, and tasted less acidic.  That is how they came to start growing rhubarb in the dark.

I really really love this rhubarb.  When I see it in the market at the beginning of the season, ..  I HAVE TO HAVE IT.

It is so brightly red that you almost cannot believe that it is a natural colour.  Your disbelief grows even more when you cook it- it becomes electric pink..

This is my home-made forced rhubarb jam- which we enjoy with yoghurt.  It looks like this...  quite spooky.. very inedible-looking, I must say..

BUT, it is really good!!

Great info on forced rhubarb in Yorkshire..  I don't mind paying a premium price for something as special as this.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/mostof_forcedrhubarb.shtml

Power Cut..

We had a power cut...

In the past, I've shared an ex-council flat with three other girls, and lived in a half-basement flat where things easily got mouldy.  We've lived in a flat where we had mice issues, and a flat where we found mushrooms growing in the bathroom (well, only twice).
But, it was the first time that I experienced a power cut.

Well, it wasn't too bad..  I won't go as far as saying "I enjoyed it", but well, you know, it's a bit of "un-everyday-experience".
It seems like it was the fault of E_F..  They worked overnight, and we got our electricity back the following morning.  Phew!

Egerton House Hotel/

Today, I went to Egerton House Hotel  to assist with an interview and photo session, for a Japanese magazine.  We came to write about their afternoon tea.

This was the first time that I work with this magazine, but I have been to this hotel before, for another magazine.  It is such a lovely hotel - and the staff are all very nice.  Since I had such a good impression from the first time, I recommended it to this magazine, and so here I was back again.. happily.

What is special about Egerton's afternoon tea is that the setting is so comfortable, and makes you feel at home.  Sometimes the posh, over-elegant afternoon tea at big hotels is a bit too much.  Here, they serve afternoon tea all through the afternoon at the time you want (reservation required!), and you can stay as long as you wish.  Taking a seat by the fire, or by the window, it makes you feel like you have been invited to a good friend's home for tea..
(No, I am NOT being paid by them to write this!!!)

My favourite dessert! (well, one of..)

I have been pretty busy this week, and I'm realising how difficult it is to update a blog every day!  I already gave it up.. (oh, but of course my sore throat IS gone!)
Last thing on my schedule today (Saturday..) was a business meeting, which started at 6.40.  When I finally got back home, close to 9 o' clock, I was so happy that my husband awaited me with a nice dinner :)

..And, what is better than finishing a hectic day + lovely dinner with a nice gelato?

This is from our neighbourhood gelateria - which is perhaps the best gelateria in London... the gelato is soooooo good.
The shop is so close to our flat, that we can have a takeaway, walk back home, and the ice cream still won't be melted.  It was -2c outside.. so it was a perfect weather to "transport" the gelato.
We shared a cup of cookies & cream, Valrhona chocolate and Madagascan vanilla.  I think they gave us an extremely generous serving..  It was a perfect dessert!!

Ayurvedic remedy/

Back in November last year I caught a really persistent cold.  I had a sore throat, and was coughing all the time.  This yellow stuff is what proved to be a miracle medicine.
Today I felt something coming... and so I made it again.

It was recommended by my yoga teacher.. an Ayurvedic remedy.
It is a mixture of turmeric and honey.  Well, out of curiosity I added a bit of ground cinnamon and ground ginger.  The cinnamon added a nice flavour, and ginger some heat.

I carried on "eating" this, 2-3 times a day, and..  on the third day, my cough stopped, completely.
Was it just the timing??  I don't know, but it seemed to have worked for me, much better than some of the cough medicines and Stre--ills.
Whenever I feel that my throat is a bit sore, I make this and eat.

It is not delicious.. but if you don't like taking pills, give it a go!!

Hampton Court Palace -King's Kitchen /

We went to Hampton Court Palace today.  It is located just outside of London, not too far from Wimbledon.  It took about half an hour by train, from Waterloo.  It was very cold (around 1c!), but the sky was clear, and it felt like a proper winter day - reminded me of the winter days in Tokyo.

This palace used to belong to Henry VIII, who is known mostly for his six wives.  Apparently, according to the extremely knowledgeable staff, he was a gentle king, and used to be a very handsome young man.  It is not very easy to believe..

The rooms and the halls of the palace were beautiful and interesting, as was the garden - even in winter time.  It was vast!!  I felt like coming back in summer, though it would be very crowded for sure.

Well, actually..  my main objective for visiting this place was in its kitchen.  They were having a special once-a-month cooking demonstration.  Mutton, not lamb, as the gentlemen "chefs" explained, was grilled over open fire, for a loooong time.

They used to roast such meat for everyone- including servants, while Henry VIII stayed here, using great open fires. The kitchen was filled with a lovely aroma of grilled meat, and the warmth from the fire.

Just like the other staff, the people here were very knowledgeable, and answered almost any question.  I asked them if they had a chef or academic background - and surprisingly, these 'actors' were more or less all "enthusiastic amateurs".

After the lengthy preparations, they all got seated and showed us how people use to eat and drink, in the 16th century.  It was very interesting - the only thing is..  I wish we could have tasted them too!!

Soupe de poisson on New Year's Day

Happy New Year!!
For a change, this time I am writing with Japanese first..

In Japan, there is a custom to eat soba, buckwheat noodles on New Year's Eve.  There are various theories to explain why we eat soba on this day: some say soba is a symbol of longevity (as it is long), and others say soba dough was used to collect gold dust, and is thus used as a symbol of wealth.
I wish I had the authentic Japanese soba noodles, but sadly I forgot to buy them.. so bought a "made in China soba noodles" (do they eat soba in China??) from a nearby supermarket..  it wasn't bad..

Although I made minimum effort to keep the Japanese tradition for New Year's Eve, I totally gave up for New Year's Day.  We have an elaborate and beautiful feast called "Osechi", but I didn't even think about making it (well, for this year..)
Instead, for dinner, we had Soupe de Poisson!

It all started when my parents-in-law came to London in November last year.  They brought us something called rouille, which is an accompaniment for fish soup.

This "Fish Soup" is basically Boullabaisse (or so they say).  It would be too much for an amateur to prepare, and apparently  you can buy it quite easily at supermarkets in France.  We found it at a fishmonger in our neighbourhood, so got one few weeks ago.

Here's how I presented it: as it should be, with thin slices of toasted baguette and Gruyère cheese, and rouille on the side.  Bon appetit!

Sadly, our expectation was not met.
It was mostly salty- and to our great disappointment, there was no richness, deepness of seafood.
Not sure if this is the limitation of ready-made fish soup, or if there are better ones.  It tasted very far from the Bouillabaisse I had in Marseilles.
The rouille was good though- maybe we should just eat this spread on a piece of bread..
