The Balkans: Ohrid (Macedonia)/

We left Sofia at 12:00 AM on a night bus, headed for Skopje, the capital of Macedonia.  From there we were going to take another bus at 6:00 AM to get to a town called Ohrid.

The bus journey went well - or too well.  Instead of five and half hours as we were told, it only took four and half hours.
And, Macedonia is one hour behind from Bulgaria - so it was only 3:30 AM when we arrived at this dark bus station where homeless people were sleeping on benches.

We found a 24 hour bakery just outside of the bus station and had an espresso with lots of sugar.
It tasted SOOOO good.

I slept all through the next leg of the journey.  When I woke up, it was already bright and we were in Ohrid, an old town by an old lake.

The lake is as deep as 300m, and as long as 30km.  Apparently its history goes back three million years!

The water was so clear, and we saw people fishing as well as swimming (bet it was very cold).

The most famous and picturesque church in the whole Macedonia is here - Church of Sveti Jovan at Kaneo.
The old man whom we purchased the ticket from was very kind and explained the frescoes inside the church to us in French (a bit mysterious that his first foreign language was French).
I feel that these little interactions are what make these trips so worthwhile.

Ohrid was a touristy town by Balkan standards.  However, we found the place so tranquil compared to Western European towns.  It even had some kind of serenity - perhaps it is the blue sky and the deep blue water.

What we remember from here is the beautiful scenery of the old church by the ancient lake, and the poppies blowing in the wind.
It was such a peaceful place...

. 。. 。. 。. 。. 。.
