The Greek Islands: Santorini

We took a ferry from Rhodes to Santorini.  It was an overnight trip, and we were awakened whenever the boat stopped at an island (it stopped 4-5 times..).  Each time, they made an announcement that woke everyone up.  However, it was a fantastic feeling to wake up in the middle of the ocean.

We decided to go to Santorini because..  well, because everyone goes, and they say it is THE Greek island that you imagine, when you hear the word "Greek island".  I can see why..

We stayed in a small town called Oia, which is at the tip of the northern end.  It has a  postcard-view, which is just blue and white and blue and white..  The sky, the ocean, the houses, the domes, the waves..
I can understand why the Greek flag is blue and white!

They say that the sunset in Oia is the "most beautiful sunset in the world".  Great PR.  Even those who stay in other places on the island come to Oia around the time of sunset.  They all walk towards the high point, or try to get a seat at restaurants with balcony.  Well, we were no exception..  however, we were lucky to have a quiet private balcony at our hotel.

I think the scenery is the thing on this island.  It was breathtakingly beautiful!
However, I was a bit disappointed that the place was extremely touristy.  Apparently in July and August, cruise ships come and pour out as many as 50,000 tourists daily on the island!  The population is normally 13,400 (based on Wiki article, 2001 statistics), so you can imagine the mayhem..
Perhaps the concentration of hotels and restaurants on Oia and Fira is another reason why we got the impression of seeing too many tourists.  We rented a car, and drove around the island one day, and that was a good idea - we managed to see something quite different..

I spoke with one local, and he said the best season was end of September to October.  There aren't too many tourists and the sunset is the best at that season.
So, if you are thinking of going to Santorini, do go in autumn!

The Greek Islands - Rhodes Island/

Soon after coming back from Japan, we flew to the Greek Islands.  This time, it was for a holiday - only holiday!!

Our first destination via Athens was Rhodes Island.  The old town of Rhodes is surrounded by a medieval wall, which was built by the Hospitaliers of the Knights of St John.  Last year I read a book about the Knights, and decided that I wanted to visit Rhodes.  We therefore began our trip from Rhodes, despite the island being rather far from most other (tourist destination) Greek islands.

I will let the photos do the job of telling you what the town looked like -  the Palace, where the Knights used to live, the ramparts, and the hospital, which is now a museum.

After seeing the Old Town, we rented a car for a day to look around the island.  Our first destination was Lindos, where we visited the old Acropolis up the hill.   The view was spectacular, and I loved the colour of the sea.  I thought the view justified the long climb in the heat!  However, the Pantheon looked a bit too re-constructed and new..

I must have been in the sun a bit too long.  I had to fight a headache, and we decided to have a more relaxed afternoon.  We drove off to a place called Moni Filerimou, where we found another small chapel built by the Knights.  Unfortunately there was not a lot of explanation about the chapel or the archaeological remains, but I liked the serenity that filled the place.  It was very breezy, and I enjoyed the cool air very much after the harsh sun in the morning.

I think it's worth mentioning our car rental story: the rental agency guy met us at a spot he suggested outside the walls (there is a car restriction inside the Old Town).  He said that when we returned, we should just give him a call, and then hide the car key under the mat on the driver's side, close the door without locking, and just leave the car - i.e. no need to wait for him to come.  We did exactly as he said, and it seemed to work.  Loved this relaxedness.

I can't really explain why and what, but there was something magical about this island, despite it being a big tourist destination.  Once you find the untouched, untouristy part of the town, you'll know what I mean.  I am already looking forward to going back there - and be lost again in the medieval maze of alleys.

Part2/ Taste of Home Part 2

One of the many things I look forward to eating when I come back home is GOOD SUSHI.  So we went to Tsukiji, where the famous fish market is.  There are lots of nice sushi restaurants around there.

In Japan, "fatty fish" are called "glittering fish" (hikari-mono which sounds nicer in my view) - and I love them.  They are inexpensive and yummy and nutritious, what more can you ask for?
Below is the photo of sardine (iwashi) - topped with grated ginger and sliced spring onion.

It was the season for bonito (katsuo), so we ordered some.  I couldn't even remember when was the last time I was in Japan at this season.  It tasted goooood.

Here is a trio of Gunkan (the sushi wrapped in nori and made in to a oval-cylinder shape).  Small white fish (shira-uo), sea urchin (uni), and salmon roe (ikura).

Based on my own observation, (a lot of) Western people dislike having fish with its head on.  Even when it is a large fish which you eat with knife and fork, they prefer the fish to be filleted.  If they have to eat whole fish with heads..  some might freak out.  "God, they have eyes!  They are looking at me!!!"..
Oh well, but us Japanese people, we eat them.  It's our culture, and I'm proud of it..

Trust me, it's good.

I always think that sushi is beautiful.  The colours of fish flesh are just amazing.  I wish the photos came out better.
A few years ago when I was at this sushi restaurant, I was talking with one of the sushi masters and said, "Your plate of sashimi is so beautiful!".

He said,  "Not as much as you, madam"

..I wasn't quite sure if I should be flattered, to be told I was more beautiful than fish??

This sushi chef was not the same person, but was also a very cheerful and nice man.  I'm already looking forward to going back for more sushi..!

Taste of home - part 1/ 故郷の味 Part1

I haven't updated my blog for a long time..  and it is because I was back in Japan for an event that I was involved in.  The month of May just flew away, without me noticing at all...!
My stay was rushed, as always.  I had some work to do, but of course I took advantage of the occasion and indulged myself with delicious food :)  Of course my mother spoiled me with her home-cooked food (had lovely meal with lots of bamboo shoots - very seasonal).  Other than that, during the first few days I was stuffed with Japanese sweets.  Here are just a few of them..

The pictures to the left are Dorayaki.  "Dora" means gong, and normally a dorayaki consists of two round sponges with sweet azuki (or aduki- but azuki is closer to Japanese pronunciation) bean paste sandwiched in-between.  However, this one had a twist, as instead of sandwiching two rounds, it was one folded in half.  The sponge had a distinctive brown sugar flavour which was very pleasant, and the azuki was excellent.  It was a sweet present from one of my very good friends.  I also love the packaging - very neat.

Later when the pastry chef who was involved in the event arrived from London, I recommended him to taste this dorayaki - he loved it!

This is another Japanese sweet called Uiro.  Apparently more than one region claim that this is a special delicacy of the city, but this one comes from Tokushima prefecture.  It was a gift from my father's friend.  Again, I love the presentation.  So delicate and beautiful.  There were two flavours: azuki and green tea, and the flavour was so subtle.  I think uiro is something that you enjoy for the texture and the feeling of its smoothness, more than its flavour.  I enjoyed the cool, smooth mouth feel very much, which left a light aroma of the beans or the tea.

Seeing these photos again make my mouth water - but seeing the photo of my little niece makes my heart melt...  This is my cute little niece, just turned 10 months.  I was very happy that I could spend some time with her, although I am sure she won't remember me when I see her next time.. :(
Well, I just have to see her more often!!
