春の花/ Flowers at Kensington Gardens

時計も夏時間に進み、いろんな春の花も咲いている…けれど、どうも天気は安定せず、気温も低めの日が続いています。今日など、スコットランドでは吹雪いていたそうです。
そんなわけで、なんとなく公園にも足が向かなかったのですが、今日は珍しく朝から晴れていたので、それっ！とばかりにカメラをつかみ、ケンジントン・ガーデンズまで行きました。
公園で咲いていた花をご紹介します。


コブシに似た花。木蓮はあともうちょっと。(英語ではどちらもマグノリアだそうですが）

桜の一種。

こちらでも桜の木はよく見かけますが、東京育ちの私が見慣れた、ソメイヨシノのような桜は見たことはありません。この桜は花弁が白っぽく、ソメイヨシノよりも小さめの花です。

このブログのタイトルにもしているくらい、桜は大好きな花です。こちらの公園は日没には門を閉めてしまうので、夜桜見物ができないのは残念です。
緑色の、オウムのような鳥が分かるでしょうか？南国の鳥のようですが、どこかから逃げ出したのでしょう。今ではすっかり群れをなすようになってしまいました(寒いのに平気なのかしら？）
桜の花の蜜が目当てらしく、一心不乱という様子で花を貪っていました。

こちらは、また別の桜です。こちらは中輪の八重咲きで、濃い目のピンクです。木の丈が低く、広がるように咲いているので、前に立って近景の写真を撮る観光客が一杯いました。

そして、イギリスの春の象徴ともいえる、ダフォディル（黄水仙）。分かりづらいかもしれませんが、3-4種類の、微妙に色合いの異なるダフォディルが植えられていました。曇った日でも、そこだけ陽が射したような、あざやかな黄色です。

南国の花は色が鮮やかだと言います。北国であるものの、春に咲くイギリスの花も、かなり鮮やかです。パステルの色をした花より、原色に近い色のほうが多いのではないでしょうか。
暗く、寒く、長い冬のあとだから、余計に明るく見えるのかもしれません。
このあとに続く、さらなる春の花々が楽しみです。

The clock (which is now on "summer daylight saving time") and calendar both tell me that it is already spring, but we have been having mixed weather, with rather chilly days (and snow in some part of the country..).   So I have been missing the opportunity to take photos of spring flowers in the sun.  However today, the sky was clear from the morning, so I grabbed my camera and ran to Kensington Gardens.

Magnolia - just started blooming.  Pink magnolia was not ready yet..

Cherry blossoms, my favourite flower (as you can tell from the title of this blog!)

The blossoms here are quite different from Somei Yoshino, the cherry blossoms most frequently found in Tokyo - these are paler and have smaller flowers.  I love them nonetheless!

Can you see the green birds that look like parrots?  They must have escaped from somewhere, they clearly don't belong to the UK..  These birds now make a huge flock, and can be seen everywhere in this park.  They must have been enjoying the honey from the blossoms.

These are another kind of cherry blossom.  They are slightly larger than the previous ones, and are darker pink.  Since the tree was low and spread out, a lot of tourists were taking pictures in front of the tree (I must have been in their way).

And the daffs, as Brits call them.  This year, they planted 3-4 different types of daffodils.  I like the way it looks so bright, even under the dull and grey sky. 

I'm always amused by the British spring flowers being so bright in colour - almost electric.  They say that southern flowers are colourful, but British flowers are not much less colourful in my view.  Very few seem to be soft or pastel-coloured.  Maybe they want to fully express that spring has finally come, after a long dark winter.. Yes, spring has come.. finally!!  (Maybe..)
