It's spring!! / 春の訪れ

Spring has come!

Since we know too well that a sunny spring day is so precious here, we decide to take a walk to Kensington Gardens.

I just managed to catch the white magnolia.  These flowers bloom a bit later than the pink ones.  I feel that this year I missed the beginning of spring, being too depressed and occupied by the earthquake.

Here's another kind of magnolia.  In Japan we see more of this colour, but not this shape - so unique.




And, some cherry blossoms.

Will the warm sun and the pretty flowers of spring console the people, who are still suffering in the northern part of Japan?  I hope so...

春です。

天気の変わりやすいイギリスでは、春の天気の良い日というのは貴重です。

ということで、この春の陽ざしを楽しむべく、散歩に出かけました。

行先はケンジントン・ガーデンズ。

白モクレンもそろそろ終わりに近づいてきました。でもなんとか、きれいな花の写真が撮れました。

しかし、ピンクのマグノリア（モクレン）は、今年は撮影せずに終わってしまいました。いつも花が咲いた！と言っては写真を撮りに出かけるので、地震のあと、いかに季節の移り変わりも目に入らなかったのかということが、写真の少なさで分かります...。

こちらもまたべつのモクレン。日本でよく見かけるものと色は同じだけれど、カップのような形がユニーク。

それと、桜。

 

うららかな日差しの中で春の花を見ていても、被災地の人々のことが頭から離れません。

かの地の人々も、花を見て、少しは気持ちが和んでいますように...。

Art in Kensington Gardens/ ケンジントン・ガーデンズのアート

I tend to think that the best things about London are the parks, museums and it being so international.
And, when you combine all these, you get this.

Art installation by Anish Kapoor, an Indian Sculptor, in Kensington Gardens.

I went to his exhibition at The Royal Academy in 2009, which was very interesting.  I saw the same sculpture back then, and enjoyed the artist's playfulness.
Placing it in the middle of the park has a very different effect, but I like it nonetheless.

It's like looking into a giant spoon.  You must have looked into a spoon, laughing at your deformed, upside-down face when you were a kid, for sure?












It looks like this when you see it from far away..  Just like a super-large picture or a photograph panel in the middle of the park.

Four of his sculptures have been on display in the garden since September, and the exhibition is lasting until March.  I think I will miss them when they are gone.  It's become part of the garden.

It was a fine day - we have been having so many grey and rainy days, that a day like this is so precious.  You never know when you will see a sky like this again..

ロンドンの良いところは？と訊かれると、大抵「公園と、美術館と、それとインターナショナルなところ」と答えます。

それらをぜーんぶ一緒にすると...

こうなります。

ケンジントン・ガーデンズ内で現在行われている、インド人の彫刻家アニッシュ・カプールの展示です。

1年ほど前にも、ロイヤル・アカデミーで行われたカプールの展覧会を見に行ったことがありました。そこにも同じ彫刻がありましたが、そのときにもみんなが近寄って覗きこんで、なんだか楽しい雰囲気でした。

公園でもなんだか面白い感じです。

凸面のほうはやや細長く映るだけですが、凹面の弧の内側に立つと、さかさまに映ります。みんな、写真を撮ったり、あとずさってみたり。

小さい頃にスプーンを覗きこんだときのことが思い出されます（私だけじゃないはず...）。

遠目に見ると、こんな感じです。

公園の真ん中に突如現れた、巨大な写真か絵のように見えました。

公園内には、全部で4つの彫刻が展示されています。

期間限定のものなので、3月までだそうです。見慣れてしまったので、なくなったら寂しくなりそうです。

この日は珍しい晴天で、散歩日和でしたが...こんな青空、次は一体いつ見られるのやら。

毎年のことながら、ロンドンの冬は暗いです...

Birds in winter garden/ 冬の公園の野鳥観察

We saw our first snow already in November.  It is so unusual- this is the coldest winter I have ever had in London (I've lived here for a scary 8 years).
However, in central London the snow didn't stay on the streets after the first several snowfalls.  When it snowed last night, I thought that even if the snow doesn't stay on the pavement, it might do in the park..

..and I was right.

As usual, I brought my bag of nuts and seeds to feed the birds.  Not sure if you can do this in other places, but here, I always manage to feed the birds directly from my hand.
Robins are my regulars.  They are SOOOO cute, and I love them, but too often they scare away the poor blue tits, which are significantly smaller than robins.

Blackbird - I love it when they sing in the summer evenings.  They are a bit too big to come to my hand, so I normally throw some sunflower seeds near them.  They eat various things, from worms to berries.

..and, I don't know what this bird is..  I see them from time to time, but not too frequently or regularly.  Anyone know the name??

..and my husband to the rescue.  He figured out that this was not a magpie, but a "forestpie" in Danish - which made me think of a pie with berrries.. but in fact in English, is a Eurasian jay.

I read that the cold winters (last winter was pretty cold too) are giving wild birds a hard time finding food.  I know that hand-feeding is not the best way to save wild birds, but it is the only way I can feed them without also feeding the rats with wings (i.e. pigeons)!

今年の冬はとっても寒く、すでに11月のうちにロンドンでも初雪が降りました。ロンドン生活も長くなりましたが、11月の雪は初めてでした。
昨日もまたかなり雪が降ったので、ケンジントン・ガーデンズに行ってみました。路面には積もらなかったけど、公園ならもしかして、と思って...。

予想どおり。

例によって、ナッツやひまわりの種などを持って行きました。小鳥にやる餌です。手のひらにナッツ類をのせてじーっとしていると、鳥たちが餌をついばみに来ます。

コマドリは常連です。まんまるの目、ふっくらとした体、とっても可愛い小鳥です。

が、小柄なアオガラが来ると、威嚇して追っ払ってしまいます。

譲り合いの精神はあまり持ち合わせていません...。

こちらはブラックバード。

日本名はクロウタドリで、ツグミの一種だそうです。

春から夏にかけて、夕方になると良い声でピーコロピーコロ...と鳴いています。

黄色の輪の目に愛敬があり、ちょっと九官鳥風。

手のひらに乗せるにはちょっと大きすぎるので、大き目のナッツなどを近くに放ってやります。

で、この鳥は何なんだろう...誰か知らないかな、と思ってたら、夫が「デンマーク語でなら知ってる」と。

...ウィキペディアって便利ですね。

英語で Eurasian jay、日本でいうカケスだと判明しました。

日本ではカケスって、見たことなかったのですが。

このところ寒い冬が続き、小鳥たちは餌を探すのが大変だというニュースを読みました。

そんなこともあり、私は公園に行っては小鳥に餌をやっているわけですが、手でやるのがどこまで野鳥にとって良いことやら、分かりません。

ですが、これがリスや鳩に餌をやらないで済む、唯一の方法なのです。

小鳥に餌をやっているのが鳩やリスに見つかると、奴らは襲わんばかりに追っかけてきます。

そんなわけで私は、ヒッチコックの「鳥」を思い出しながら、毎回逃げているのでした...。

Early autumn walk in the park/ 初秋の散歩

I took a short walk to Kensington Gardens this morning.  It rained last night, and the air felt clear and fresh.
I took my favourite route along the flowers, admiring the fresh colours that look brighter after the rain.

..and I came across .. lots of mushrooms...

Really, there were mushrooms everywhere- or shall I say mushrooms were mushrooming everywhere..

They looked quite similar to the normal mushrooms I buy at supermarkets.  However - of course it didn't occur to me to pick some back home to make some mushroom risotto.  No.

Interestingly, there were some different looking ones too..

In our previous flat (in London), we once had an incident of accidentally harvesting a mushroom - in our shower room.  Since then, I think I have something about mushrooms.  It's kinda creepy, as they are suddenly there, where there was nothing the day before.
I can tell you, bathroom is not an ideal place for mushroom harvesting, for sure.

今朝（と言ってもだいぶ時差が生じてしまいましたが…）、ケンジントン・ガーデンズまで散歩に行ってきました。

昨晩はだいぶ降ったけれど、おかげで今朝はすっきりとして、気持ちの良い朝でした。

公園では、花壇のある小道を通りました。しずくの光る花がきれいでした。

で．．．歩いて行ったら、キノコがいっぱい。

英語で何かが急激に増えたり、急成長することを「キノコのように」というのが分かった気がしました。

普通に売っているマッシュルームとよく似ていましたが、キノコ狩りする気にはなれませんでした（当然か）。

ちょっと離れた場所には、少し違う形のキノコも生えていました。アミガサタケなどとも違うし、ちょっと松ぼっくりのような。

以前住んでいたアパート（ロンドン市内）のシャワールームに、キノコが生えたことがありました。カビの問題すらない、窓もある、湿気のこもらないシャワールームだったのに。

それ以来、なーんとなくキノコというものに対して、気味の悪さをふと感じることがあります。

昨日までなかったのに、今日はそこにある、という存在感が不気味に感じるのでしょうか。

いずれにせよ、シャワールームのキノコ栽培は、おすすましません．．．。

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2010/ サーペンタイン・ギャラリー 夏のパビリオン

Serpentine Gallery is a very small gallery, located inside Kensington Gardens.
Every summer, there is an architectural exhibition at this gallery, taking advantage of the space - though the gallery itself has limited space inside the building, Kesington Gardens has lots of space!

This year's exhibition was this.. red.. roofed terrace café.. not sure this is the right description though.

The building was designed by Jean Nouvel.  In the video, the architect says that London is characteristically "red" (eg. double decker, telephone booths..), and he thought of this bright colour, standing in the middle of a green park.  The effect is clear - it really stands out, and is almost blinding.  Everything here is red- even the fridges in the café!

I like the openness and the airiness of the pavilion, and the way it invites people in.  There are hammocks and pin-pong table too..

There are small funny tricks here and there that you discover as you go inside and sit down.
I look forward to going back, next time maybe to sit on one of the cushions on the floor, and read my book, feeling the breeze..

サーペンタイン・ギャラリーはケンジントン・ガーデンズ内にある小さな美術館です。

ここでは、毎年夏になると建築の展示（というのでしょうか？？）があり、館内ではなく屋外に、著名な建築家の作品を造ってしまいます。美術館そのものは小さくても、使える敷地は広いのですね。

今年の作品は、赤い…カフェスペースというかなんというか。このような建物です。

今回は、ジャン・ヌーヴェルという建築家の作品です。緑の公園の中で、この真っ赤な色の映えること。目がチカチカしそうなくらいです。中は、ゴミ箱から冷蔵庫に至るまで赤。

サーペンタイン・ギャラリーのビデオで、本人は「赤はというのはロンドンの象徴的な色だと思います。ダブルデッカーとか、電話ボックスとか…」と話していて、なるほど…と思いました。

天井が高く、囲う固定された壁がほとんどなくて、とても開放的な空間です。周りにはハンモックがあったり、卓球台があったり。スーツ姿の男性が、息子たちとピンポンに興じている姿がほほえましい＾＾

実際に足を踏み入れないとなかなか分からないのですが、中にはちょっとした仕掛けがあちこちにあり、遊び心いっぱいの空間でした。

次に行くときには、床に並べられたクッションを確保して、のんびり本でも読んでこようかと思います。

Summer walk in Kensington Gardens/ 夏の散歩

I went to take a walk in Kensington Gardens.  It's been a while since I came here with a camera.

I was surprised to find a cherry tree with... cherries!  I know it sounds silly, but a lot of cherry trees blossom, and you don't see the fruits.  On this, there were many plump cherries - so pretty.

When I find something new in a place I go all the time, I wonder what I have been looking at till then.  At the same time - it is nice to find something new in your neighbourhood..

As expected, many people were walking their dogs in the park.  Many dog-walkers come here too.  Becoming a dog-walker is always my favourite fantasy profession (well, one of them).


I do love the fact that this place sometimes look like it's not London..  can't this picture pass as woods in the countryside?

It was a very pleasant walk - it feels so precious, knowing that you won't have summer days like this very often in London!  I feel like having a picnic - if the weather stays like this.. fingers crossed!

今日はケンジントン・ガーデンズに散歩に行きました。しばらく、カメラを持っていくことはなかったので、久しぶりの公園ネタです。

公園に入ってすぐのところに、桜の木があります。春先には桜の花が目を楽しませてくれたのですが...なんと、今はサクランボを実らせていました！
桜の花が咲いても、サクランボがしっかり（？）実っている桜の木って、わりと稀です。ぷっくりとした実が、たくさん実っていました。

この公園の近くに住むようになって、もう数年経つのですが、サクランボに気づいたのは今年が初めてです。

今まで何を見ていたんだか...と思う反面、新しい発見があるのは、ちょっと嬉しかったりもします。

予想通り、公園内は犬の散歩をしている人がたくさんいました。

ドッグウォーカーといって、犬の散歩屋さんらしい人もよく見ます。犬好きの私の、憧れの職業です^^

この公園を歩いていると、ふとロンドンだということを忘れそうになります...。まるで、どこかの田舎のような景色には見えないでしょうか。

なんとも気持ちのよい散歩でした。

ロンドンでは、晴れた夏の日というのはとても貴重です（曇りか、雨のことが多いので...）。

これからも、良い天気が続きますように。そのうち、ピクニックでもしようっと。
