The Greek Islands - Rhodes Island/ ギリシャ島めぐり － ロードス島

Soon after coming back from Japan, we flew to the Greek Islands.  This time, it was for a holiday - only holiday!!

Our first destination via Athens was Rhodes Island.  The old town of Rhodes is surrounded by a medieval wall, which was built by the Hospitaliers of the Knights of St John.  Last year I read a book about the Knights, and decided that I wanted to visit Rhodes.  We therefore began our trip from Rhodes, despite the island being rather far from most other (tourist destination) Greek islands.

I will let the photos do the job of telling you what the town looked like -  the Palace, where the Knights used to live, the ramparts, and the hospital, which is now a museum.

After seeing the Old Town, we rented a car for a day to look around the island.  Our first destination was Lindos, where we visited the old Acropolis up the hill.   The view was spectacular, and I loved the colour of the sea.  I thought the view justified the long climb in the heat!  However, the Pantheon looked a bit too re-constructed and new..

I must have been in the sun a bit too long.  I had to fight a headache, and we decided to have a more relaxed afternoon.  We drove off to a place called Moni Filerimou, where we found another small chapel built by the Knights.  Unfortunately there was not a lot of explanation about the chapel or the archaeological remains, but I liked the serenity that filled the place.  It was very breezy, and I enjoyed the cool air very much after the harsh sun in the morning.

I think it's worth mentioning our car rental story: the rental agency guy met us at a spot he suggested outside the walls (there is a car restriction inside the Old Town).  He said that when we returned, we should just give him a call, and then hide the car key under the mat on the driver's side, close the door without locking, and just leave the car - i.e. no need to wait for him to come.  We did exactly as he said, and it seemed to work.  Loved this relaxedness.

I can't really explain why and what, but there was something magical about this island, despite it being a big tourist destination.  Once you find the untouched, untouristy part of the town, you'll know what I mean.  I am already looking forward to going back there - and be lost again in the medieval maze of alleys.

日本からイギリスに戻ってすぐ、今度はギリシャに行きました。今回は、純粋にホリデーです。

島をいくつか巡ったのですが、最初に行ったのはロードス島でした。ロードス・タウンの旧市街は、中世に聖ヨハネ騎士団が造り上げた城壁に囲まれています。塩野七生の「ロードス島攻防記」を読んで以来、ロードス島に来てみたくて、ギリシャの島々の中ではかなりトルコよりになるこの島まで足をのばすことにしたのでした。
城壁、騎士団の城、今は博物館になっているかつての病院など、どこもどっしりとした中世の雰囲気が残っています。
言葉で感想を書くよりも、写真をご覧いただいて、その雰囲気を感じとっていただければと思います。

一日は、レンタカーして島内を巡りました。最初に向かったのは、リンドスという街です。突き出た先端の山の上に、アクロポリスがありました。暑い、熱い日差しの中、登り切って見た海はとてもきれいでした。

ただ、ちょっと残念だったのは、古い遺跡のあちこちがあまりにも新しく再建されていたこと。真っ白でぴかぴか、って感じで、5000年の歴史があまり感じられませんでした。

日差しにやられたようで、そのあとは少し頭痛がしました。

なので、午後はすこしのんびりすることにして、モニ・フィレリモウという場所に行きました。ここにも騎士団が建てたという14世紀の教会と、紀元前のものだという遺跡がありました。説明がほとんどなかったのが残念でしたが、とても静かで風が涼しく、人の多い、暑いリンドスのあとではとても気持ちよかった。

ここで、レンタカーの話を。

通常はレンタカー屋さんに行くのですが、ロードスでは待ち合わせ場所に車を届けてくれます。そして、返却するときには、キーを運転席下のマットの下に隠し、車のドアはロックせずに閉めて、レンタカー屋さんに「戻りました」と連絡すれば、本人同士が合わなくてもOK、なのです…。

なんてアバウトなんでしょう。素晴らしい。

ロードス島には、説明しがたいのですが、なんだか不思議な空気が流れていました。観光化も進んでいるのですが、それでも消えてしまわない魅力があって、ぜひまたもう一度行きたい、と思いながらあとにしました。

あの中世を思わせる小路に、再び足を踏み入れる日がまた来ますように。
