Columbia Road Flower Market

I know..  I've delayed uploading this for a month now.  Well, anyway, here we go.
We went to Columbia Road Flower Market on a Sunday.  I realised very quickly that we made a late start..

It was really busy, packed with people.  We struggled to stay together and to move at the pace we wanted to.  However, it was fun seeing people happily carrying huge bouquets of flowers, or pots of trees.

There were so many to choose from - from hydrangeas, which we seldom find at flower shops in Japan, to olive trees, to red hot chilli peppers!

I was particularly happy to find what they called "Chinese Lanterns".  It is called hohzuki in Japanese, and we love them so much that we even have a market market that only sells hohzukis, in Senso-ji (Senso Temple), in Tokyo.
However, our market is held every year on the 9th & 10th July, so I wonder when the right season is..??

We brought back some lisianthus and two pots of herbs - rosemary and basil.  The latter two are still healthy, adding some flavour to our everyday dishes :)

これを書いているのは日記の内容からひと月後．．．だいぶ前のことですが．．．

この日、コロンビア・ロードというところで毎週開催される花市場に行ってきました。
行ったときにはすでにこの混雑ぶり。もっと早い時間に行けばよかった。

身動きすらしづらいほどの混みようで、自分のペースで歩くこともできません。
でも、大きな花束を抱えた人や、鉢植えをかついで歩く人々を見るのも面白いものです。

ひまわりばかり売っているお店もあれば、

日本では珍しいアジサイの切り花をうるお店もあるし、

トウガラシからオリーブの木まで、ほんとにいろいろとありました。
（トウガラシにはレッド・ホット・チリペッパー　火山よりもホット！と書いてありました．．．）

見かけてなんだか嬉しくなったのは、ほおずきでした。
こちらでの名称は（一般的か不明ですが）、Chinese Lanterns 、中国の提灯。
東京のほおずき市は7月なのに、これをみかけたのは10月の市場です。はたして、ほおずきの「本当の」季節っていつなんでしょう？？
私は初秋という印象があったのですが、はて。

何も買わないのもナンなので、トルコキキョウと、ローズマリーとバジルの小さな鉢植えを買って帰りました。
ローズマリーとバジルは今も元気で、食卓に香りを添えてくれています 　＾＾
（が、いつまで生き延びてくれることやら．．．）
