Weekend in South of France- Part 1/

”We spent a long weekend in south of France”

I like the sound of it very much, but in fact our main objective was to see a dentist.  This is far from the fun impression you get from the first sentence, isn't it?
As anyone who has ever lived in London would know, finding a decent dentist in this city is a nightmare.  So we always go say Hi to my husband's parents, and visit the dentist there, who is also an acquaintance of my father-in-law.

We arrived at Nice airport around 11.30 am, and it was already really hot and humid -which is rather unusual (normally it is a dry heat).

Luckily, we finished our dentistry adventure quite quickly, though not painlessly.  I thought I deserved a  peaceful afternoon by the swimming pool...

My parents-in-law must have spent lots of time in their garden, taking care of the trees and flowers.  Lavender was in full bloom, and very pretty!  I love the scent of lavender, and it was so nice just to listen to the hum of bees.. and a butterfly or two might come to pose for the perfect shot!

We decided to eat in that night - which meant eating out in the garden, of course.  We had some champagne for an aperitif to celebrate my parents-law's 40th wedding anniversary, and also my husband's birthday.

We had chicken grilled by my father-in-law, and mother-in-law's lentil salad.  It was all very good, and tasted just like it should, in summer, in Provence.
We sat in the candle light until late, and the evening remained very warm.

It was a lovely night - apart from the fact that I got really badly bitten by a mosquito...!!

Peach and almond tart/

I knew I was going away over the weekend.
I knew they get ripe all at once.
I knew one punnet was enough.

But I couldn't fight the "Buy One Get One Free" offer for nectarines and peaches.  So, I ended up buying a punnet each of nectarines AND peaches.
It was only Saturday that I bought them, but already by Sunday evening, the kitchen was filled with the sweet scent.
By Monday, the peaches started looking a bit wrinkly.  It was the best timing to eat them, but well, I wasn't sure if it was wise to eat five peaches at once...
So, I made them into a peach tart.

I am sure there are hundreds of peach tart/pie recipes.  I quite like this very classic tart, which is made with pâte sucrée and crème d'amandes.  The combination of sweet crust and cream goes well with almost any fruits.

I had to be sensible and not buy crème fraîche, to avoid creating any more left-overs.  However, I normally serve this kind of fruit tart with crème fraîche.  It's divine!
Sorry peaches, you did deserve some crème fraîche, I know...

Now, what should I do with five nectarines..???

Royal Opera House/

We went to see an opera today, at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden - which is a beautiful building.  It was a matinee performance, so I decided to take advantage of the daylight, and brought my camera.

I love the foyer - which is so airy and light.   I believe it is worth a visit, just to be inside of the building, even if you don't go for a performance.

I really love the atmosphere of this opera house.  It has the classic theatre feeling, that makes you get so excited to be inside.  Our seats were 'Amphitheatre' and the view was like this - we could see the stage pretty well, also the orchestra pit.

In the past I have taken some seats that were very close to the ceiling - like these..

I still enjoyed the performance from this height, though sometimes it was difficult to see the surtitles.  Well, since the tickets are so inexpensive for these seats, you simply cannot argue- Madame Butterfly at Royal Opera House for ten pounds..!

This time, the performance was Le Nozze di Figaro.  I am still an opera beginner, and I prefer watching something light-hearted, fun, and with tunes I know.  I think we chose the perfect performance.  It was really enjoyable, and we laughed a lot!

During the break, people go to the foyer bar and have drinks.  With the high glass ceiling, it is absolutely delightful on summer days.  While the people sitting closer to the stage enjoyed their drinks in the foyer, those of us, who were at seated higher up enjoyed looking down on them..

If you think going to a matinee performance on a nice summer day is a waste of sunshine, you should think twice - I feel that I enjoyed both the opera and the weather!

American shortcake with strawberries

Strawberry season is here!  I love British strawberries :)))
I quite like the fact that the strawberries here are not too "modified" - not as much as they are in Japan.  OK, Japanese strawberries are almost like jewels - perfect shape, colour and size.  They are very sweet too.  It feels as if they are some work of art.
However, I do adore the British ones, which taste more - natural.

It makes me smile to see strawberries like these in a same punnet..  (it's almost impossible in Japan!)

When strawberries are in season, I love baking this - American style shortcake.  I make it at least once every season - at least once.

It is completely different from the "short cake" we have in Japan, which is a light and soft sponge cake (and it's also totally different from British shortbread..).
If scones can be described as "something between bread and biscuit", this shortcake is "something between biscuit and cake".  As the name suggests, it has a short texture.
You split it open while it's still warm, fill with sliced strawberries tossed in sugar, and pour some chilled, unsweetened cream.  It is a very simple summer-time treat, and yet it's delicious.

Melt-in-your-mouth shortcake with a flaky and light texture, filled with sweet and juicy strawberries, and the cool, rich flavour of cream...  It is a 'mariage' made in heaven!   I served with some raspberries too, but to go with cream, strawberries are the best.

I read somewhere that this was a recipe created in 19th century America, when people were still expanding the frontier.  Come to think of it, I don't think I have ever come across something like this in the UK..

Along with strawberries, we are beginning to see British blueberries, blackberries and gooseberries too.  I must make the most of the short berry season in the UK!

** I will add the shortcake recipe soon...**

Rose Garden in Regents Park

。~  。~  。~  。~  。~  。~  。~

We went to the Rose Garden inside Regents Park today.  Since it was Sunday and the weather was wonderful, there were many people..

Some of the roses were in full bloom, and some were already fading.  Though they are all "roses", the timing of their flowering really depends on the variety.  Of course, not only the timing was different from variety to variety, but also the size of the flower, the way the flower opens, and the length of the stems.

Below are some of the roses that I liked...

This one is called Perception.  I wonder why it is named as such??  It was a lovely rose, and the colour changes as the flower blooms.  These two pictures are both of Perception.

This one is called Nostalgia.  I quite liked this one - the red & white ratio varied a lot depending on the flower.   Another one that makes you wonder why 'Nostalgia'..  Hmmm..

I love the name of this variety - it's ICE CREAM!  This has to be MY rose ;)  I suppose this is vanilla ice cream...

This is called Savoy Hotel.  The "real" Savoy Hotel is currently closed for refurbishment, and is due to open this year.  I like the classic look of this rose, and its "rose pink"...

The garden was really full of roses - as far as your eyes can see!  The air was filled with the lovely scent of roses.. it was an indulgent feeling, breathing the beautifully perfumed air in the garden..

There were quite a few people sunbathing in the park.  Some were in their swimming suits..  well, common in London, but not where I come from.
I was regretting that I didn't bring my hat to avoid the harsh sun - so could hardly believe that these people could stay out in the sun for such a long time!  Me?  I'd melt...
